This study is that how the Korean traditional costume will be continued based on the succession and development of the Korean traditional costume, which is unfamiliar to the next generation. For this, it examined that where the Korean traditional costume’s status is in the changing society upon 21st century. It reviewed that, while the existing way is for the old generation, how the next generation is communicating with the Korean traditional costume. The result is as follows:
First, in 21 st century, the Korean traditional costume’s status became higher due to a policy at the state level and the international event such as Han style, Han brand, the national brand and the PIFF (Pusan International Film Festival). With this, people are more interested in the Korean traditional costume, the design and color of it was very much changed from the traditional image due to a craze for popular historical drama since then. On the contrast, it is true that the importance and the traditional value of it were declined by the Korean traditional costume rental shops and the wedding planners.
Second, the old generation generally thinks that it is uncomfortable and not very practical, in spite of the positive policy for it and it’s elevated status. Also their way to communicate with it is dependent on others and vertical. We can say that it is one side communication to convey from the subject to the object.
Third, on the other hand, the next generation can get it positively as the clothes that represent a long history, formal dress and a noble clothes rather than having a negative idea for it. Even if there is an opinion that the modernized Korean traditional clothes needs somewhat convenience, also the will that tries to maintain the beauty of it is strong.
Fourth, the next generation is meeting with variety way such as a cartoon, mass media, music and a play. They are multi communicating with the common theme of the Korean traditional costume between the subject and the object, and between the subjects. Therefore, their communication is horizontal and positive, voluntary and open way. Especially, they are drawing naturally public interest and recognition of it through the play in the flash mob method, but also playa role as a cultural envoy to promote the Korean traditional costume for foreigners.
The Korean traditional costume has been loosing the identity of the traditional costume under the fusion traditional costume in 21 st century.
The national brand that this generation needs is definitely not saying to transmit the tradition just as it. The attitude that the next generation thinks how they lead the Korean traditional costume in 21st is very bright. However, they need help from the old generation for properly succeeding and developing our culture and tradition.
