Objective: This study is aimed at analyzing the characteristics of Work-related Musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) from various prospects based on the industrial accident statistics and field survey. The results can be used to develop more effective policies to prevent WMSDs. Background: Cleaning work is demanding and labor intensive. Many tasks involve heavy manual work, putting strain on the heart, muscles and other tissues. Cleaners are often required to work in awkward postures for long periods and this may lead to long-term damage, but there has been little research results about cleaner’s work status and characteristics of WMSDs. Method: (1) We analyzed the various characteristics of WMSDs of cleaners according to industrial accidents statistics in 2009-2011(i.e. age, gender, working duration, risk factors, etc.). (2) Also, we conducted field survey concerning the musculoskeletal discomfort, understanding of WMSDs, musculoskeletal symptoms, etc. at 100 enterprises, 536 cleaners in Gwangju provinces. Results: The majority of patients were over 60 years old(46.2%), female(75.2%), companies with less than 50 workers(83.3%), less than 6 month of working duration(34.8%), and forceful exertions(63.3%). According to Musculoskeletal Burdened Work which was notified by the Minister of Employment and Labor in 2011, high risk task was shown in Task2, Task3, Task4, Task8, and Task9. The musculoskeletal discomfort in accordance with Borg’s CR10 scales of main tasks consisted of 5.86 wiping workers, 5.78 mopping workers, 4.74 swiping workers, 2.28 preparing/waste collecting workers. Conclusion: These results showed that there were significant characteristics of WMSDs of cleaners that could be used as basic data for the WMSDs prevention policy.
