Objective: The aims of this study are to investigate the stationarity of electromyographic signals of trunk muscles during isometric and isokinetic exertions and to compare the signal stationarities between trunk extension velocities. Background: Many researchers have agreed that EMG signals are stationary during isometric contractions and nonstationary during isokinetic contractions. On the other hand, some researchers reported that EMG signals were stationary during limited isokinetic exertions. Therefore, it is necessary to collect more information to understand the signal stationarity at isokinetic conditions. Method: Ten subjects participated in the experiment. They performed the sustained exertions during isometric and isokinetic conditions with a combination of load (25, 50 %MVC) and trunk extension velocity (0, 15, 30 degree/s). The collected signals were examined by the modified reverse arrangements test. Results: The stationarity of EMG signals were 88.2, 87.8 % during 25 and 50 % MVC exertions, 94.8, 86.4, 82.9 % during 0, 15 and 30 degree/s trunk extensions. The signal stationarity was affected by the factors of trunk extension velocity and window size at the 0.05 significance level in the analysis of variance. Through Tukey’s HSD test, the stationarity of EMG signals during isokinetic exertions at 25 %MVC was the same as the stationarity during isometric exertions. In particular, the signal stationarity was very high when 500 ms window size was used. Application: These results provide the criteria to select the window size in order to secure the high level of stationarity during isokinetic exertions.
