This study compares strategies combating ageism among Korea, Japan, and US to identify its implications for Korea’s aging society. In the US, anti-ageism movements have been developed based on the perspective of civil right that supports the right of elderly to participate in society. In Japan and Korea, however, there have not been comparable anti-ageism movements for the right of older people. Instead, Japan has focused on developing aging policies to protect older people’s security which play roles to buffer negative effect of ageism. Korea has shown, however, small incremental development in aging policies. Interestingly, although three countries have different levels of strategies combating ageism, all three countries share a discourse: ‘New Ageing’. This study shows the relationship between ageism and the development and consequences of social policies for older people and finds ways to reduce ageism and to facilitate cross-generational integration in Korea.
