Economic choices are constrained not only by the technological, informational, and income limits but by institutional factors such as social norm, habits, and customs. In other words, institutional environments can be constraints on strategies. Interestingly, the institutional perspective provides different viewpoints to explain competitive advantage and organizational performance, So far, negative aspects have been often emphasized in the institutional perspective. However, the institutional perspective has positive aspects as well. Institutional environments can be constraints as well as opportunities to generate competitive advantage, which allows organizations to enhance performance, This study examines a unique organizational strategy to decrease uncertainty regarding external environments and increase performance, In specific, strategic conformity is introduced as a key factor determining organizational performance under institutional environments. Also. the interesting Microsoft case is discussed regarding organizational conformity to institutional environments to enhance performance.
