Objectives:This study was conducted to see whether there are any relationships among depressive symptoms, negative symptoms, emotional awareness, and quality of life in schizophrenic patients. The emphasis was on the relative predictability of emotion-related variables on their quality of life.
Methods:Fifty-seven patients diagnosed with schizophrenia by psychiatrists. The patients were evaluated by clinicians using both the Korean version of the Calgary Depression Scale for Schizophrenia(K-CDSS) and Scale of the Assessment of Negative Symptoms(SANS). Thepatients completed Trait Meta-Mood Scale(TMMS) and Happy-Quality of Life Scale(Happy-QoL).
Results:According to the study K-CDSS scores were positively correlated with SANS. K-CDSS scores were negatively correlated with both TMMS and Happy-QoL. Moreover, TMMS and Happy-QoL revealed a positive correlation. The hierarchical multiple regression analyses involved in our tasks demonstrated that K-CDSS and TMMS, SES, Age had a significant effect on overall Happy-QoL scores were 31%(p<0.001), 12%(p<0.01), 9%(p<0.01), 7%(p<0.01) respectively.
Conclusion:This Study indicates that the depressive symptoms and the emotional awareness are the most powerful predictors on subjective quality of life in schizophrenic patients. Thus it is necessary to notice the importance of emotional awareness. Therefore, intervening when patients exhibit depressive symptoms can produce positive effects.
