The prevalence of overweight and obesity has increased markedly in the last two decades in Korea. Many of the cardiovascular and metabolic complications of excess body fat are already detectable in overweight children and adolescent. There is an urgent need for effective nutrition education for healthy weight. Female high school students" (N=404) nutrient intake status were analyzed by BMI and dietary habit. Volumes and portion sizes for the 24-hr dietary recalls were estimated by using measuring cups and spoons, photographs of food portions. The mean age, height, and weight of the study subjects were 16.3 years, 162.3 cm, and 55.3 kg, respectively. Mean BMI was 21.1 kg/㎡. By BMI, the underweight, normal weight, overweight, and obesity groups were 18.5%, 60.3%, 11.3%, 11.3% respectively. The significant differences were in intakes of energy, carbohydrate, vitamin B₂, saturated and mono-saturated fatty acid (p<0.05) between normal-weight. High school females who
avoid drinking milk have low dietary calcium intakes. Daily intakes of protein, dietary fiber, calcium and potassium were significantly higher in the faster eating group (less than 10 min) than normal eating group (15-20 min). The energy intake was higher in the less eat breakfast group than eat breakfast regular basis. The intake of saturated fat was higher and vitamin A and ß-carotene were lower than eat more frequently snack group. High school females of the vegetable avoiders had a low vitamin C intake. Milk more frequently eaters had high fat, dietary fiber, potassium, retinol, vitamin B₂, and calcium intake. In conclusion, nutritional education is necessary to encourage intake of variety of food and milk.
