Weighing the relevance of the literary category of ‘contemporary British fiction’ against the transnational transformations in the British culture and society, this article aims to examine recent studies on post-war British fiction. After a brief survey of general critical trends in this field, it focuses on two types of fiction: the historical novel that has remarkably flourished for the past few decades, and the black British fiction which has drawn increasing critical attention in accordance with the deepening multicultural situation in Britain.
In the current studies of the historical novel, Linda Hutcheon’s theory of ‘historiographic metafiction’ has played an important part. Highlighting the epistemological doubt about historical truth that historiographic metafiction displays as well as various novelistic strategies mobilized for that purpose, she succeeded in distinguishing the characteristics of the postmodern historical novel from those of traditional historical novel, as articulated by Georg Lukacs. Taking it into consideration, this article traces the ways later studies have responded to her argument and deepened the inquiry into the nature of historical novel. Then turning to the burgeoning studies on black British fiction, it ponders on the appellation and boundary of ‘black British literature’ and introduces some noticeable critical attempts to delineate the topography of this intriguing area of fiction, including those ones that explore the contemporary black British fiction in connection with urban space.
