This paper explores the expletive there in English with regard to two main properties. First, I consider the property of there when forming a small clause with its associate DP in the underlying position. Regarding the property, there are two approaches put forward in the literature: there-predicate analysis and DP-predicate analysis. I argue for DP-predicate analysis with the relevant supporting empirical evidence. When it comes to wh-extraction from there-constructions, I assume that there has different informational properties between there-BE and there-V constructions. In there-BE constructions, there has a neutral informational status. However, there has a definiteness effect in there-V constructions. Due to the difference in the informational status of there, the accessibility of wh-extraction is explained.
