The purpose of this paper is to compare and contrast Beloved and A Mercy in terms of slavery, the suffering of women, and different kinds of love. Though most of Toni Morrison’s texts foreground the slavery, the two novels, separated by a twenty-one year gap, focus on slavery in different contexts. First, I examine the types of slavery in both novels, showing the similarities and differences in the adoption of slavery. Morrison tries to show how racism is inherent in slavery after the Bacon’s Rebellion. Secondly, I compare the ways in which major female characters confront sexual abuse and other forms of suffering while trying to heal their trauma. Third, I attempt to suggest various aspects of love: mother-daughter love, love between men and women, and love within the black community. I argue that though the abandoned daughters in the texts feel betrayed and isolated, their mothers try to vindicate their behavior through historical rememory. In conclusion, I argue that Morrison tries to recuperate and restore the voice of female characters, asking the readers to realize the atrocity of slavery and learn the lessons of history.
