"Invoking the Gods: Interpreting Invocations in Mesopotamian Prayers and Biblical Laments of the Individual," originally published in the Journal of Biblical Literature 129.2 (2010), 303?315, compares the long hymnic introductions of Akkadian shuilla-prayers to the brief vocatives in the dingir-shadibba-prayers and biblical laments of the individual (such as Psalms 6 and 13). Building on the idea that there is a correlation between formality and social distance in ritual as suggested by Catherine Bell, this study correlates the different levels of formality in the invocations of Akkadian and Hebrew prayers to the relative status of the deity invoked (high god vs. personal god). This study adds to our understanding of the various prayers and exposes a century-old, theologically-motivated misuse of Akkadian material in Biblical Studies.
