Rev. Dr. Manoo Song Chang-Keun(1898-1950) was one of many Korean church leaders who were kidnapped to North Korea during the Korean War, and was influential enough to prevent the division of the Korean Presbyterian Church. As an activist in the national independence movement and a literary writer, Rev. Song devoted himself to the formation of a national church as a pastor and theologian. In a word, he was a person of "doing theology". He stood firmly upon the Reformation tradition and exerted his efforts to restore the biblical faith for the proclamation of the Gospel of Christ. As a minister and a theologian, he emphasized "a Word-centered Church" for the formation of missional churches. Therefore, he taught that preaching and worship are supposed to be most important in a Christian life. While he earned his doctoral degree in New Testament Theology, he taught pastoral care at the Chosun Theological Seminary and stressed the growth of the Korean church and the Christian way of life to this end. In fact, he established the "House of Holy Poverty", putting the spirit of St. Francis in practice. He lived a simple, honest, and sincere life "like an ox" to build the church for the nation and people. In this point, his theology can be called a "Theology of the Ox". Especially, the elements which he pointed out as crises of the church were meant for the reformation of churches in his time. However, a new light must be shed on his faith and theology today for the Korean church of our generation is facing a similar crisis.
