This study aims to show that the word ‘walk’ is a case of polysemy, not one of homonymy, within the framework of cognitive linguistics. Some senses of the verb which are specified in a three dimensional oriented physical space are central or prototypical. The prototypical senses profile the process in which a mover goes forward by putting one foot in front of the other in a regular way. Less prototypical and non-prototypical senses are linked to prototypical ones through cognitive mechanisms such as profiling, subjectification, and conceptual metaphors. The senses of the verb are interrelated, forming a criss-cross semantic network.
