This study analyzes architectural styles and exhibition types of museum through historical data in that exhibition space is able to explicate a social context of artwork as a medium.
Museum space-model had been completed in the period that the perspective of modernism formed, thereby combining with the form change of ‘museum-like model’ before 18C.
Historically, by comparing the development process of ‘museum-like model’ after renaissance and historic data, the shift from the personal space to the social space is verified.
Museum as a social space is understandable through appearing the dilettante critic in art like Giulio Mancini and a limited social class of people who visit museums.
With the change of art museum into a social space, museum becomes a narrative space based on a collection of analogies through the limitation of circulation system. Museum is able to develop into a political space with this as a momentum.
In other words, national museums of art and city museums which reflect national identity like Musee du Louvre appeared following the emerging of storytelling museum.
The failure of revolution expands museums all over europe. The new cultural properties law shows the state system of quasi-publicness. Museum is the space that create the national images in this era.
An international exposition after this era offer the museum as a regime spreading all over the world. Also, the consideration of the progress in civilization could be identified by an arrangement of pavilion in the international exposition.
However, An international exposition emphasize on the connection between the traditional artworks and the new products as well by promoting new consumerism in the early nineteen hundreds.
The advent of object-centered museum which focus on the function of individual images rather than narrating story emphasizes on the museum’s educational function.
After the end of the Second World War, setting a high value on the idea of educational viewpoint and neutrality of valuation, a museum exhibition has been presented neutral space. Moreover, it becomes the key in understanding contemporary exhibition culture along with the way of multi-level show which put a bigger emphasis on experience.
Analyzing a concept of museum, a way of show and a development process in history, depending on not only a social requirement but also a way of representation in artworks (the way of social communication in image through narrative structures of multiple artworks and exhibition frames), museum spaces are invaluable as historical records.
Museum’s exhibition provides grounds for understanding a relationship between art and society with members of society who make art discourses - collectors, artists, critics and art lovers - as the central figure at the same time.
