This paper focuses on one of the Japanese history professors, Hideki Kajimura (1935-1989), who researched Korea"s modern and the post-war Japan history. He was the person who represented the Korean modern historical research through the theory of immanent development theory based on the awareness of issues of a postcolonial liberal. Furthermore, he was a social activist who defended the human rights of Koreans in Japan and was active in the practical activities.
With respect to the Korea-Japan relationship in "70s and "80s, Hideki Kajimura viewed the economic relationship between Korea and Japan as a colonial relationship with the nature of the vertical division of labor system as presented under Japan-Korea system. Under the Japan-Korean system, the people of Korea worked under the system of a low-wage policy environment, through President Park’s oppressive regime and were forced to survive the harsh living environment. However, even though the economic scale was fast-growing through modernization policies, the people faced the deconstructive labor environment that contradicted modernization.
Hideki Kajimura argued that Japan society could maintained the stability due to such deconstructive labor environment by the people of Korea. In addition, he believed that the modernization ideology of President Park’s regime had similarities with the nationalistic modernization of Japan"s modern ideology that verified in the idea of sending troops to Vietnam War. Hideki Kajimura had an extraordinary interest regarding the democracy movement and its ideology that against the contradictions of dependent modernization in Korea.
Hideki Kajimura accuses such ignorance and indifference of Japanese society toward the sufferings of the people of Korea underpinning the prosperity of Japanese society. Moreover, comparing to the development of democracy movement in Korea, it aggravates the collective consciousness of crisis in Japanese society and makes the Japanese people to be settled under the imperialist authorities along with the diluted awareness of the issues.
Along with the mental crisis in the humanity of the Japanese society and the dismantling of Ethics, Hideki Kajimura was seeking practical historian contributing to the subject of Japanese society in the spirit of revolution and had focused on Chae-Ho Shin"s life and his research, the pioneer of Korea"s history of ethnic. In turn, it led to the meaning of the history as per Seok-Heon Ham who was seeking the meaning in the suffering of the people in history.
Hideki Kajimura sympathized Seok-Heon Ham"s indomitable attitude and observed the target of salvation to the people of Japan by reversing the law of the jungle to world peace toward world-historical mission. He is seeking a fundamental shift in the way of life to abandon the vested interests being as developed countries and overcoming of the modern order of advanced-underdevelopment order.
