Dong Zhongshu(董仲舒, B.C.E.170? ~ B.C.E.120?) has been evaluated to have a refined, indirect and academic style of demonstration writing in Han dynasty. In his most famous essay Tian Ren San Ce, He used series of chaning to explain phenomena of the society and principles of ruling the empire. The flow of ideas seemed to be very natural like river in the spring as one of the critic said. Dong Zhongshu tried to set up the theory of natural disaster[災異論], and the stages in detail were arranged in the system. He suggested many definitions of the concepts of Confucianism in order to persuade the emperor to take them into consideration on his policies. Through these rhetorical methods, his essay seemed academic and logical.
He showed a lot of superfluousness in his essays, too. It was because he did not only answer to the emperor’s question, but he also tried to express his own ideas of controlling the world in the same essay. He used too many figures of speech, and it made his essays more complicated.
Dong Zhongshu alluded to classics only about Confucianism, while other writers cited those about Daoism or Strategists. It helped him to made the emperor understood clearly that Confucianism should be accepted as the ideology of Han dynasty some day. Dong Zhongshu wrote another essays such as criticizing the Five Dominating Kings[五覇] to the King of JiangDu[江都王] and criticizing feudal lords, but both were too straightforward and he failed. Other essays on holding the harvest ceremony for the heaven and the earth[郊社對] and on the Five pace[五行對] are in the form of questions and answers, but the former is doubtful to be considered as Dong Zhoungshu’s work.
Although Dong Zhongshu could not succeed to realize his ideal before he died, Confucianism finally became the core ideology of the empire, and many writers learned Dong Zhongshu’s writing. His writing style became a significant one in the future. The demonstration essays has been consistently written until the 20th century, and we can see how the courtier tried to persuade the king effectively.
