Despite the fact that the possessors are inanimate, the s-genitives with nouns denoting ‘time’ and ‘location’ have been widely used in modern English. This paper attempts to find out that in the s-genitives with ‘time’ and ‘location’ possessors, (i) what kinds of semantic categories possesums belong to, and (ii) how closely possessors and possessums bond.
To achieve this goal, in Section Ⅰ, I put forth these proposals: in the s-genitives with inanimate possessors denoting ‘time’ and ‘location,’ (i) the possessors are likely to be definite; (ii) the conceptual distance between the possessors and the possessums is as close as the syntactic distance between them. Before going into the main issue, Section Ⅱ overviews the previous research on English genitive variations with focus on determining factors in the choice of s-genitives. Through the analysis of American English newspaper corpus data retrieved from Corpus of Contemporary American English, Section Ⅲ examines the internal structure of the s-genitives with ‘time’ and ‘location’ possessors, and then further categorizes the type of possessums. It has been proposed in Section Ⅳ that the definiteness of ‘time’ and ‘location’ possessors and the cognitive adjacency between the possessors and the possessums lead ‘time’ and ‘location’ possessors to form s-genitives in spite of their inanimacy.
