The syntactic properties of English gerunds are worth analyzing in that they are not so simple as they superficially appear. Many linguists have tried to analyze gerund constructions to suggest these properties, but they did not fully explain why English gerunds have such dual syntactic properties as a noun and a verb at the same time. Nor did successfully they explain why the subject of gerunds has either a genitive Case or an accusative Case. Accordingly, The main purpose of this study is to explain the two-fold properties of English gerund constructions by the isomorphism based on Haiman’s principle (1980) : ‘the principle of one form corresponding to one meaning.’ Also, this study attempts to show that when we choose a genitive Case or an accusative Case for the subject of English gerunds in Modern English, the difference in the syntactic functions can also be explained by this isomorphism based on the same phenomena in the choice of the subject of infinitival clauses, specifically through analogy of the same nominal properties of English gerunds as the nominal function of infinitives both in Old English and Modern English.
