Four Quartets is generally acknowledged as the most enhanced philosophical poem of Eliot’s later poems. Affection of oriental idea is distinguished in these poems and the study of it has endlessly succeeded from Korean scholars of T. S. Eliot. It is already acknowledged that The Waste Land contains Buddhist idea which makes the poem far deeper and complicated. But the real oriental idea is more distinguished in Four Quartets, which is enhanced as the most deep and ambiguous one in modern poetry by it. “Burnt Norton” and “Little Gidding” are representative and they are a kind of preface and conclusion of these meditative songs. They repeat one idea, the viewpoint of time, that is the typical Buddhist idea. The beginning of “Burnt Norton” is much impressive because of that oriental idea, which would have been much shocking to the western readers of those days. Time in this poem does not flow straightly but circulate as a circle and the past and future accumulates in one point of the present. In the Buddhist descriptions the present is repeatedly stressed and that is a main idea of this poem. But it is more important that oriental idea enhanced Eliot’s poetry as a far more complicated and ambiguous one than the fact of it’s existence in his poetry. Without this oriental idea Eliot"s poems could not ascend to the highest class.
