Out of the total global water resource only 2.7% water is available as fresh water. The estimated annual precipitation (including snow fall) in India is about 4000 BCM. The development of water resource is of utmost importance for food security, economic prosperity and enhancing the quality of life of the people. The agriculture is of fundamental importance in India"s economy contributing substantially to the gross domestic product(GDP) and employment and assured irrigation water supply is of great importance for food security of the country. The future food security of India will depends upon the availability of irrigation water and the productivity of the consumed water. The future additional demand for irrigation water will depend upon the potential for improvement in rain fed agriculture, additional water demand from domestic and industrial sector which competes directly with irrigation sector, potential for exploiting gound water resources, potential for prserving rain and river water, and contribution of poor quality water to increase agricultural output. The possible avenues to improve the productivity of the consumed water is by adoption of crop/varieties which consume fewer units of water with same yield potential as that of high water consuming crop/varieties, praticing deficit, supplemental and precision irrigation techniques, improving agronomic practices and providing reliable water supplies. Over exploitation of ground water in Northeast part of the country is depleting the groundwater irrigation resources, especially in high food production areas of the country. Arresting the depletion of ground water is of utmost importance for the sustainable food production and food security of India.
