Barth’s doctrine of religion might be re-interpreted in a more dialogical way in the light of Korean multi-religious context. Such a dialogically-oriented re-interpretation may open up a creative path to widen and deepen Barth’s doctrine of religion. A careful reading of Barth’s texts displays the polyphonous layer of Barth’s doctrine of religion beyond a binary opposition or a Hegelian dialectical synthesis between revelation and religion. Particularly Barth’s arguments regarding religion as analogy and medium of revelation as well as the Chalcedonian explanation of the relationship between revelation and religion seem to proffer an angle to look into Barth’s doctrine of religion more positively in the context of inter-religious dialogue. Thus, the thesis is put forward as follows: Barth’s doctrine of religion includes germinal arguments for a dialogical impetus on religion as well as a critical perspective on religion. While previously the latter has been illuminated, now it seems to be demanded to reflect on and illumine the former in the context of inter-religious dialogue. Especially, a dialogical perspective based on the notion of analogy and mediation rather than an exclusivist perspective based on the notion of exclusion and replacement is necessary in order to enhance the public communication and responsibility of Christianity in Korean multi-religious context.
