The ancient Christian tradition regarded the Sermon on the Mount as the way of salvation. But on the question, if the Sermon on the Mount could be realized, theologians were divided. This theological situation resulted in indifference of the Sermon on the Mount. Furthermore protestantism tends to replace the Sermon on the Mount with the doctrine of justification by faith alone.
Faced with this theological situation, this paper has attempted to throw light on the Sermon on the Mount. The result is as follows. The first, the Sermon on the Mount is an attempt not to overcome Tora, but to interpret Tora in the sight of the coming new aeon. In fact, Jesus interpreted the tora as the way of salvation, which corresponded to the coming kingdom of God. The other, three issues of the Sermon on the Mount, namely, the blessing on the poor, the teaching of the enemy love, and the Lord’s Prayer derived from same source, that is, from the compassion of God. They could be distinguished only in forms, in which the participation in the mercy of God is realized. In other words, they have their origin in the compassion of God till the self-sacrifice.
In sum, I’ve tried to make clear that the Sermon on the Mount indicates the life of the people of God, that must prepare and reveal the kingdom of God. In this context this paper presents two issues. The one, the kingdom of God could be revealed only through the truly people of God. Without obedience of the people of God, the kingdom of God could not help but conceal its reality. This is decisive meaning of the Sermon on the Mount. In this context this paper suggests enemy love as criterion of the people of God. The other, the only immutable law is the teaching of enemy love as a participation in the mercy of God, whereas the teaching of nonviolence is not a steadfast rule. Therefore we can assert that the commendment of the enemy love is unchangeable, but form of the enemy love such as nonviolence is changeable.
