This study purposes to organize the system of language education of the opposite nations in elementary and secondary schools of Korea and Japan, that is, Japanese language education in Korean elementary and secondary schools and Korean language education in Japanese elementary and secondary schools, compare and analyze the curriculum of each other. The summary of the discussion is as below. In the elementary education, both nations had fragmentary education on each other’s language as a part of the education for international understanding. Both nations had the selective course for each other’s language in the middle schools. However, the establishment of Korean subject is depending on the school’s discretion in Japan but in Korea, it is the compulsory selective subject, so that the number of the course-established schools in Korea are much more than in Japan. For high school education, it is figurative that Korean language education and Japanese language education in each other’s nation is of great importance as the second language, and this tendency seems to be continued in the future. The implication followed by the comparison and revision of curriculum is that both Korea and Japan need to discuss on the direction to develop curriculum and materials to use in common for the international understanding education program. Plus, it would carry the importance in foreign language education in both Korea and Japan, if three nations in Northeast Asia prepare the common framework for language education by referring to the example of Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
