Kim Gu-yong materialized introspection of modern poems to represent Korea"s 1950s postwar reality through his poem of "Stamped"(1957), “Ideal of Dreams”(1958) and “Flower of Discord II”. This paper firstly studied "Stamped"(1957) as part of concentrated study of Kim Gu-yong"s medium-length prose poems, focusing on shock of modernity carved in illusion of the subject as well as allegory of that illusion and superrealism.
The subject(main figure) of "Stamped" desires to stamp out his premodern habits of life and to have modern conditions of life. However, he is not able to fulfill his desire; he is the schizophrenic subject with deficiency as well subject contemplating of modernity. His Illusion is made from his trauma and desires derived from the reality, rather than a mere dream separated from the reality. Shock of modernity leaves trauma to his unconsciousness, while his suppressed desires run away from unconsciousness of urban night alight by magic lanterns and are realized repeatedly through his illusion.
His illusion is super realistic in that it turns fragmented experiences of the big city to images of magic lantern, while it is is allegoric in that it offers the potential for dreaming and restoring totality of the world before its fragmentation. Through illusion, he comes to know that he is not the subject of modern life but externality and others of modernity. By representation of poetic moments of mdeium-length prose poem "Stamped", his self-consciousness restores what is broken by fragments into totality in a moment. He becomes awakened he is the essence of the real world, not its fragment and sees through that he is the totality of the world together with all others. While reminded of suppressed reality, heembraces super reality to overcome the reality, by wonder of illusion allowing the availability of other world than the reality. In this point, the form and fantastic description of Kim Gu-yong"s medium-length prose poems express fragmented life and trauma of modern world which existing lyric poems are not able to represent, and seek to give solution to them; His works have implications for history of literature as a poetic contermplation of modern poems and poetic adventure.
