From pre-historic period the maritime activity was developed brilliantly in Korea peninsular. The sea power of Three Hans period and Three Kingdoms period were sustained and developed strongly up to South-North Kingdoms period of 8-9th century. In this time Commissioner(Daesa) Chang Pogo, one of the great historic heroes ‘highly appeared’ and ‘ruled over The East-Asia Sea’ to achieve ‘his maritime commercial empire’.
The sailing route of the period was direct route between Korea peninsular, China and Japan ports instead of indirect coastal detour which was used previously under low-grade nautical technology fearing big waves of open sea. This wrong understanding of indirect course in sailing of this period should be corrected.
It was required to have good ships essentially for accomplishing said prosperous international trade. At that time ‘Sillaseon’ type sailing vessels were used in The East-Asia Sea internationally because of their strongness and well-going into the open sea waves. Accordingly it is presumed Commissioner Chang Pogo commercial fleet also to have used the same ‘Sillaseon’ vessels.
The mould of sea-going vessels should be V-shaped bottom type which could cut waves and proceed ahead easily different from flat-bottomed ship which is fit for the river-going ship or tactical coasting battle ship. All the displaying sea-going trade vessels of the many Maritime Museums in the world were V-shaped bottom ships. It was difficult to find out flat-bottomed sea-going ship.
The size of the ships of ‘Sillaseori’ would be different respectively according to its use, such as messenger boat and searching boat to be small but fast, instead sea-going trade vessel to be large approximately similar size of the excavated international trading vessels of 12-14th century in China.
