This study examines how the concept of revolution is embraced and defined through the works of Shin Chae Ho. It is broadly known that Shin embraced the concept by the influence of anarchism from his political exile to China in 1910. On the contrary, this study argues that Shin established his thoughts about revolution before 1910, during the Age of Modern Enlightenment.
The study compares Shin’s idea of revolution with the prevalent views of the time. In order to do so, the study looks at how revolution is represented and theorized in modern media and the knowledge network of authors in East Asia. This includes the examination on such influential modern news papers as ‘Hwangsung News’ and ‘Daehan Maeil News’, and the works of Liang qi-chao and Shusui Gotoku. Revolution in modern media and the knowledge network of authors was broken from the convention and defined as a modern concept.
Shin however used the concept in somewhat different terms. It is well represented in his work of ‘The Story of the Three Founding Fathers of Italy’(Italy Kunguk Samgul-Jeon). In this work, Shin defines revolution as the movement of destroying suppressive imperial system and establishing autonomous, independent political system. He on the other hand talks about revolution as a permanent spiritual concept that transcends this physical movement. His emphasis on revolution as a spiritual movement is very different from the prevalent views of the time that focused on political campaigns.
