This article presents a view of Korean modern history that is centered on domination and resistance in relation to co-operation and solidarity. Throughout Korean modern history, the idea of co-operative movement has become ingrained into society. Korean co-operative association has developed in two directions, i.e. domination of co-operative association by the government, and independent cooperative movement combined with social movement during Japanese colonization, the division of Korea and industrialization. In particular, since 1920, consumers’ co-operation was a major factor in the growth of the laborers-farmers-womens national independent cooperative movement started from credit association and educational-social movements. During the 1970’s~1980’s, the various consumers’ cooperatives were established that combined with the laborers-farmers-women’s movement to regulate the pricing of consumer goods. Since the 1980’s, when a social crisis resulting from industrialization was recognized, the cooperative society movement transformed into a living cooperative association in which producers and consumers cooperated with each other, and organic farming was combined with a new life-style movement. Currently, such living cooperative associations are rapidly growing and their members are expanding the mutually beneficial relationships into local community culture and throughout Korean society in general. The goal of all forms of the co-operative movement and living co-operative association is to establish peace and unity in the Korean peninsula and eventually global solidarity between all people.
