Japan’s ‘unique’experience of Hiroshima and Nagasaki made the Japanese war ‘victimhood’. This research analyzes recent popular atomic bomb films to demonstrate how basic themes of war ‘victimhood’ are reflected and reinforced. In those films the atomic bombings are depicted having little historical connection with the World War Ⅱ. That could conceal the Japanese aspect of victimizer in that war and stress the aspect of ‘victim’.
Yunagi no Machi, Sakura no Kuni provides the ideal example of atomic-bomb film genre in which Japanese civilians are innocent victims of the anonymous forces of war. This work will show Yunagi and recent atomic-bomb films use the narratives lacking the notion of historical liaison and the Japanese want to consume that sort of narratives backing hibaku nationalism or atomic bombed nationalism.
