To sum up the development of Chinese cosmological theories;
The keywords for summing up are “from the canopy theory(蓋天說) to the ether theory(渾天說).” The canopy theory is based on the outward appearances of the cosmos (i.e., sky & earth, etc). The canopy theory regards the cosmos as that which we are able to see. The sky is a canopy, and such words as ‘天地(sky & earth), 天下(under the sky; world), 中原(middle field), 中國(the center country), 天圓地方(sky is round, earth is square)’ originated from the canopy theory.
The ether theory is a cosmology derived from rational thought and logical argument. This model removed the logical drawbacks of the canopy theory through the due considerations. While the canopy theory depends on the senses, the ether theory comes from reason. Change from the canopy theory to the ether theory is a match for the transition between the geocentric theory and the heliocentric theory.
Zhang Zai constructed the cosmology of the ‘Great Void(太虛)’ founded on the ether theory. Seo Kyoungduk presented a question about the beginning of the cosmos in Zhang Zai’s theory. Specifically, the concept of evolution. was raised. It is Zhuxi’s commentaries on the “Explanation of the Diagram of the Supreme Ultimate” that dragged the theory of evolution down, and bogged down the Chinese cosmology.
Zhuxi replaced Zhang Zai’s ‘Great Void(太虛)’ with the ‘Great Ultimate (太極)’ as the beginning of the cosmos. The Great Void is qi(氣), a material force, and material stuff. It is good to explain the nature and cosmos; However, the Great Ultimate is li(理), a kind of ‘principle’. If it is said that li is the beginning of the cosmos, such a belief approaches theology rather than science. The ‘Great Ultimate’, then, resembles the God of Christianity.
The principle is one, but its manifestations are many(理一分殊). It is a sort of organicism that the information about the whole is given to all of its parts. (The Principle, li, and the Great Ultimate are kinds of information about the whole.) It is adequate to explain a living thing, an organism, or a society, but the cosmos and the natural world are inanimate beings. Li is a decisive obstacle to research nature as it is. Li is analogous to the sun, which brings the canopy theory into existence; i.e., the outward appearances of the cosmos theory.
