This paper is concerned with asymmetric movement of the goal object in double object constructions. In English, the goal object may be passivized, but it cannot undergo A"-movement. To account for the unavailability of A"-movement, we adopt Czeplunch (1982) and Kayne (1984b), in that the goal object NP is assumed to be embedded within an empty-headed PP. We have entertained two possibilities; 1) The empty-headed PP is assumed to undergo A"-movement, but we argue that this movement is illicit, appealing to Landau (2007) that prohibits the empty-headed phrase movement. 2) Only the goal NP undergoes A"-movement stranding the preposition, but it would violate the subject island. On the other hand, passivization follows the locality condition (Rizzi 1990, Chomsky 1995). As McGinnis (1998, 2001) proposes, v bears the EPP feature that probes an NP. The goal object NP is closer to the feature than the theme object NP in double object constructions. Therefore, only the goal NP A-moves to SpecTP in passivization.
