This study has been researched ‘Uses and materials of Uihyang(衣香)’ during later Joseon Dynasty through 20 different sources in 『GaryedogamUigwe』 which is belong to Gyujang-gak(奎章閣).
Uihyang used for preservation and fragrance in 『GaryedogamUigwe』. For preservation, it has been used for packing Kyomyung(敎命, royal edicts investing title to the queen, the crown prince and the crown princess), royal book(御冊) and royal seals(寶/印). For fragrance, it has been used for hanging incense pouch(香囊) at each corner of Yeon(輦, palanquin).
In general, unit of quantities of Uihyang was a Bon(封). In real it was wrapped with paper. Though there was no change in uses of Uihyang but the amount of Uihyang used was gradually increasing during 17-20C.
There were 5 main materials of Uihyang, Santalum album L(白檀香)·Lysimachiae Foenum-graeci Herba(零陵香)·Nardostachys chinensis Batal(甘松香)·Cacalia ainsliaeflora(八角香)·Syzygium aromaticum(丁香). Those were all imported from China. Those were thin sliced in royal court or otherwise rough powdered in folk, then wrapped with a paper.
The upper of incense pouch(香囊) for Yeon was made of scarlet silk and lining of it was made of blue silk. Strap ties was made of blue silk yarns.
In 19C, the material of upper which was patterned gauze has changed to plain satin. According as reducing the amount of uses of blue patterned gauze(有紋紗), they started to paint on incense pouch with Nigeum(泥金, coating material made of glue and powdered gold). There were two types of paper to pack the incense pouch for Yeon. One was Chojuji(草注紙, grasses poured paper) and the other was Jeojuji(楮注紙, mulberry poured paper). Between them, Chojuji was used most frequently. Based on this, it may assume that Chojuji would used for wrapping Uihyang before 19C as well.
