The purpose of this study was to examine the educational needs of the new elderly generation for Korean dance. The subjects in this study were 15 learners of the new elderly generation who were born in between 1946 and 1964 and participated in a Korean dance program. A survey and in-depth interviews were conducted, and the collected data were analyzed. The findings of the study were as follows:
First, they asked a lot for Korean dance education as a hobby or to lead more satisfactory leisure life. Second, they had the largest preference for folksongs as music of a Korean dance program. Third, concerning the frequency of Korean dance education, the biggest group wanted to take two lessons every week. Fourth, as to the number of hours for Korean dance education, the largest group wanted to take lessons for two hours each. Fifth, as for teaching materials, they called for dance notation, video lecture, CD textbook and teaching aid for music. Sixth, they wanted to learn about the basic motion of Korean dance. Finally, they asked a lot for well-connected standardized Korean dance educational programs.
In the future, the learning needs of the new elderly generation should accurately be grasped to step up the development of Korean dance as part of the leisure industry for the elderly, and programs should be developed in response to their needs. Besides, elderly people should be divided into several groups, and each group’s needs for education should be analyzed to develop systematic curriculums in consideration of their needs.
