The purpose of this study is to clarify the changes and trends of the Chinese in leisure and tourism. A comparative analysis between Korea, Japan and China suggests that consumption patterns in leisure and tourism tend to follow the socio-economic development stages. A number of socio-cultural theories along with empirical evidences from the previous studies support the results.
The changes of leisure and tourism consumption patterns in Korea are similar to those of Japan except that there is 10 years" time-lag.
Leisure and tourism consumption patterns of Chinese tend to follow those of Japanese and Koreans along with 10 or 20 years" time-lag in comparison.
The critical features of leisure and tourism consumption patterns of Chinese are as follows;
Firstly, Chinese increasingly prefer rest and relaxation tourism at rural or water front yard to busy and fast moving tour schedules in the recent years. Secondly, Chinese prefer participating in cruise and islands tourism along with shopping and casino. Thirdly, Chinese are highly interested in leisure and sports such as auto camping, yacht, and golf. Fourthly, Chinese like Korean stars, fashion, foods, beauty care and appliances, IT products and etc. National and local Government of Korea have to support the development of new tourism courses, and improve the level of services in response to these kinds of changes and new trends.
Further research efforts on the change of Chinese leisure and tourism consumption patterns are needed particularly in close collaboration with national and local government research institutes.
