Recently, engine thermal management systems are most importance in engine development and calibration to achieve low fuel consumption and meet future emissions standards. Especially with new legislation looking to control CO2, and hence fuel consumption, renewed interest in all sub-systems of the engine has targeted every small improvement in fuel consumption. The major components comprising current engine thermal management systems are not significantly different to those from a few decades ago and have not received significant improvements in operation. However, with the advances in engine technology the demands on the engine cooling system have significantly increased.
This paper investigated effect of coolant temperature and intercooler outlet temperature(intake air temperature) on emissions and BSFC of a common rail direct injection diesel engine. The engine was tested at different coolant temperatures and BSFC and emissions were measured on the same condition (rpm and BMEP). Also It was tested at different intake air temperatures and BSFC and emissions were measured. As the results in take air temperature had the high effect on NOx and fuel consumption and also had the high potential for NOx reduction over the stable engine operating range.
