This article reviews children’s biographies of Korean scientists, to clarify the shortcomings of existing literature and to suggest constructive collaboration to improve the genre. Although recent development in the history of science has corrected errors in popular literature and provided new knowledge and insights, children’s scientific biographies still reveal historiographical problems. First, most of the reviewed biographies deal with inventors and applied scientists, while figures related with theoretical science are poorly represented; second, scientists are usually portrayed as men of venerable personality, rather than with comprehensive explanation of their scientific achievements; third, scientists in premodern Korea are exaggeratedly portrayed as bearers of modernity, and, to highlight their progressiveness, premodern Korean society itself is described to be more conservative and more backward than reality. These problems are closely related to nationalist historiography that sets modernity as the prime goal of national history and seeks precursors of modernity. The latter half of this article further illustrates this historiographical problem, by analyzing biographies of five famous Korean scientists: Jang Yeong-Sil, Kim Jeong-Ho, and Heo Jun for premodern Korea, and Ji Seok-Yeong and U Jang-Chun [also known as Nagaharu U] for modern Korea, respectively. The case studies also give clues on how historians of science engage in the children’s literature and can contribute to improve it through constructive collaboration.
