The Mukjae’s Diary written by Lee Mun-Gun(李文楗), a nobleman in the Joseon Dynasty in the 16th Century is a historical documentary to give a breakthrough for the study of history. Particularly, it opened a new possibility for the study of the medical history in the Joseon era as Lee studied medicine and actively participated in treatment of diseases for his neighbours including himself as well as leaving all the details of his activities in his diary.
According to the diary, the medical environment in the Joseon era was quite different from the current one, for example, widespread plagues that disappeared nowadays and diseases that are hard to find now due to improvement of daily living standards. The diseases disclosed in the diary can be categorized mainly into seasonal disease, senile disease and infectious disease. Seasonal diseases were found in summer and winter seasons in the environment at the time of the Joseon era where four seasons were clearly distinctive. Moreover, since the author was in the elderly period at the time of writing, many senile diseases were also found. In addition, infectious diseases such as smallpox and malaria were mentioned quite often, which reflected the social interest at that time due to their high infectious and fatality rate.
To cope with these diseases, Lee Mun-Gun made use of a variety of drugs based on his medical knowledge for treatment of the diseases. As revealed in the diary, Lee Mun-Gun and peoples at that time were enthusiastic to treat the diseases as well as expressing their desires for better drugs. Lee Mun-Gun took the drugs daily to protect his health along with treatment, and his neighbors expected Lee Mun-Gun to cure their diseases.
The proactive attitude for treatment of diseases made Lee Mun-Gun to write his symptoms, treatment, and relationships with his neighbours via the drugs in detail. Diseases were the important issue for the Joseon Dynasty people in the 16th Century and they were the major subject matters for the diary recording daily lives. This writing style was in contrast with insipidity attitude disclosed in other diaries after the 17th Century. This could be a basis to understand the free life style in the 16th Century before the Neo-Confucianism life style was matured.
