This study aims to explore the integrated effects of both visual input enhancement and input simplification on English vocabulary learning to propose an effective methodology for teaching English vocabulary. The data for this study were obtained from 142 university students, exposed to one of four conditions: 1) no textual enhancement and no simplified input, 2) no textual enhancement and simplified input, 3) textual enhancement and no simplified input, 4) textual enhancement and simplified input. Using multiple regression analysis, this study compared the integrated effects and individual effects of input enhancement.
The results show that an integrated provision of textual enhancement and simplified input had more positive effects on vocabulary learning than that of just one type of input enhancement. Pedagogical implication based on the findings is that effects of input enhancement may be different according to its application by teachers in the classroom. In this respect, it is suggested that an integrated provision of two kinds of input enhancement can be used as an effective and practical teaching method for English vocabulary learning.
