In 2012, when the world’s film industry box office showed a 7% annual increase, China’s box office showed an annual increase of more than 30%, a rate that has been steady for 10 years. This makes China’s film market the world’s second largest one with over 2.7 billion dollars of box office profits. In the coming 5 years, China’s movie screens is expected to double by 25 thousand, while the yearly box office profits is also expected to double by 45 billion Yuan. This calls for a demand for high-quality movies. While the increasing number of imported Hollywood films stimulates the production of Chinese films, it also threatens them.
As Chinese film market is less competitive than those of its neighboring countries such as Japan and Korea, its dependency on Hollywood movies is significantly higher than those of Japan and Korea. Chinese film industry is largely limited to blockbuster movies combining martial arts and commerciality, lacking artistic creativity and technicality. Genres outside of comedy and horror are hardly produced, while high-tech films using largescale 3D screens are poor in both quality and quantity. Even 2D films fall far below the international standard in terms of their overall quality and techniques. Moreover, in the case of middle or low budget films (usually art films), the depictions of themes such as humanism, social and historical awareness, etc. are superficial and shallow rather than insightful, that they become unsatisfactory for international film festivals.
For the Chinese film industry to advance, the Chinese society must first develop high respect for arts. Governmental support is also needed. The Chinese film industry should be encouraged to adopt new themes and freely express them. The scope of themes and expression should be extended, provided that the industry also implements the film rating system to protect minors. Film producers should be supported with policies that help maintain the industry. This applies especially to independent producers so that they can cooperate with institutions and the government. By developing companies specializing in film services and techniques, the Chinese film industry must be improved. Moreover, human resources must be found and nurtured for management and production of films, suited for the digitalization, globalization and specialization of Chinese films.
