This study investigates the ways that speakers use pointing gestures in conjunction with other semiotic works to create meaningful actions within a specific context of participants. The data examined here come from three hours of video-recorded face to face conversations in Mandarin Chinese.
This study examines three case studies of pointing gesture: two with a present and directly perceivable third person reference and one with a non-present third person reference. The data show that pointing gesture which occurs simultaneously with speech is used as a conversational strategy for regulating and enhancing the interaction between participants at a particular situation in discourse. The pointing gesture is one way of addressing an action to another, marking the action as socially directed toward another rather than self-directed.
