The phonological and phonetic properties of the English palatoalveolar fricative /?/ present an intriguing situation to the second language speakers whose first language is Korean. On the one hand, [?] only occurs as an allophone of /s/ before /i/ or /j/ in Korean. On the other hand, the secondary labialization that accompanies /?/, a non-contrastive phonetic characteristic in English, forms a phonological contrast in Korean, providing the learners with two possible substitutes for the English /?/?plain or labialized. A production test is conducted with Korean-speaking advanced learners of English to investigate their production of the English prevocalic /?/. The labialization is not uniformly found in the subjects’ speech, and is subject to a vowel backness effect. This substitution pattern may in part be the result of their native language glide deletion processes, which suggests that the acquisition of the nonnative phoneme /?/ has not been achieved and learners substitute it with sequences of a fricative and glide which yield a phonetically similar outcome. The full explanation for the vowel backness effect is available under the fabric of phonological constraints against insufficient perceptual distance between sounds in contrast.
