This article examines the current status of historical research on Tsushima during the Joseon period through readings of relevant books and articles published between 1945 and September 2012.
First, the study of Tsushima during the Joseon period was led by Japanese scholars, and their research has appeared continuously. Compared to the consistent publications by Japanese scholars, the study of Tsushima in the Republic of Korea began in the 1960s, but slowed in the 1970s and 1980s. In the 1990s, research became invigorated as studies focused on aspects of diplomatic systems and mutual recognition between Joseon and Japan. Since 2000, Korean scholars have moved beyond the earlier systematic studies and now approach this subject through various themes. The horizon of scholarship on Tsushima has thus expanded, and numerous studies of high quality have appeared.
Second, looking at the periods examined by scholars in Korea and Japan, Japanese scholars have concentrated on the “medieval period,” or the early Joseon period, while most Korean scholars have paid attention to the late Joseon period or the modern era.
Third, there is a great demand for the study of Tsushima in the Joseon period to be studied further. To conduct this research, not only the selection of research themes and trends but also uncovering and utilizing related historical data is important.
Fourth, while studying the history of Korea and Japan’s relationship centering on Tsushima, scholars should keep in mind that there is always a possibility that the study of the relationship between Joseon and Japan could be understood as that between Joseon and Tsushima, which should be avoided. Thus, the study of the relationship between Joseon and Japan during the Joseon period should be conducted taking into account the different attitudes and positions of negotiation and the diplomatic negotiations of both countries in the context of their respective national systems and diplomatic relations. Therefore, studies should focus not on the relationship between Joseon and Tsushima, but between Joseon and the shogunate (Tsushima).
