Yang Kunsik, who was an evangelist of Chinese literature in the modern times of Korea, translated the full text of the classic Chinese novel, “Romance of the Three Kingdoms” and published it serially in a newspaper, ‘Mae-il Daily Newspaper’ for two years and 5 months from May 5th, 1929 to September 21st, 1931.
This paper is a follow-up research of my previous paper, ‘A Study on the translation of “Romance of the Three Kingdoms” published serially on Mae-il Daily Newspaper.’ While the previous paper shows the course of changes of the modern narrative styles focusing the relationship with a media, ’Mae-il Daily Newspaper’, this paper highlights the social and cultural characteristics reflected in the images of Liu Bei and Cao Cao. The gap between history and fiction is revealed based on the two characters, Liu Bei who has been a symbol of humanity and justice for more than 1,000 years and Cao Cao who has been relatively underestimated. It is also considered how those heros are reshaped through the union of the times and text. Based on the representative episodes used for the valuation of those two heros, how they were described in the archives, how Yang Kunsik translated and whatever meaning and status “Romance of the Three Kingdoms” has for Korean people in modern times are discussed.
As a conclusion, “Romance of the Three Kingdoms” provided a hope for a breakthrough in the realistic contradiction by concentrating the national capability in the gloomy situation during the Japanese colonial era. The reason why the reading of “Romance of the Three Kingdoms” was loved can be found in the political and historical point of view based on the legitimacy of Shu Han which means that not Wei but Shu Han had the legitimacy of the dynasty as Korea’s sovereignty was infringed. From the viewpoint of the literary history, the second reason was due to the popularity of unofficial tales and historical novels. The real characters in the history were created and reshaped as heros in the text according to the requirements and situations of the era.
