Competition of firms has changed to the art of co-opetition. Firms are currently competing in the context of business ecosystem and this requires them to not only compete but also strategically collaborate with other firms within and/or across ecosystems. This study explores the co-opetition strategy of niche firms in developing country. Drawing on a detailed observation of catching-up by Chinese enterprises in mobile handset ecosystem formed after 1999, it was demonstrated that (1) formation of local ecosystem can be backed up by government’s protective policy and platform vendor (central firm, MTK in this case), and that (2) success of niche firms depend largely on the knowledge accumulated from their past experience in relevant business sector (e.g., telecommunications equipment) and favorable internal ecosystem condition (e.g., existence of labor force and suppliers providing cost advantage). Since most of existing literature have focused on the activities of central firms in advanced countries, this study adds new perspective on co-opetition of niche firms and contributes to advance our understanding on the catching-up process of firms within the technologically lagged nation.
