This study aims to describe a relation between nominal meaning and presence/absence of the noun connective particle “の/ui” in Japanese and Korean. In the first place, we analyzed the meaning of N1 and N2 in each case of presence and absence of the noun connective particle “の” and “ui”. From the result of the analysis, We tried to explain the reason why the “zero noun connective particle” noun phrase can exist in Korean.
In section3, we argued about the semantic relationship between N1 and N2 of the omissible “の” and “ui” noun phrases, and from the results, we could find out that there is a difference in meaning between “N1의/のN2” and “N1 N2”.
The points are as follows. First, both Japanese and Korean “N1의/のN2” type noun phrase have a semantic relationship which N2 is included in the whole noun phrase semantically. Second, N1 which is in a “の” or “ui” omitted noun phrase represents property, condition, shape, and materials of N2. But in Japanese, it is possible to represent both meaning with one form such as “N1のN2”.
In the next section, we analyzed the semantic relation between N1 and N2 of the “zero noun connective particle” noun phrase which does not allow to have a noun connective particle in Korean. And we could explain that the reason why there are not allowed to have a noun connective particle is because of the meaning of N1. These type of noun phrases represent only one meaning which N1 always means property, condition, shape, and materials of N2.
Whereas Japanese “N1のN2” can represent both meaning because it is very rare for particle “no” to be omitted in Japanese noun phrases.
From the results above, it seems to deeply related to meaning of nouns and presence/absence of the noun connective particle between two languages.
