「Gomisuteba」describes social position of Korean in Japan and Japanese perception of Korean by Kanehara who is living in Korean village in Japan.
Even though Kanehara entered the war on the Japanese side, he had been discriminated against because of his nationality. At last he committed suicide and became incinerated just like useless trash.
Life of Kanehara let us know that his life was one of type of the Korean in Japan and social position of Korean in Japanese society. Writer criticizes Japanese society as Japanese imperialism.
「Tonshanobanzin」draws living of Korean in Japan and Japanese society’s cognition in them by means of main character who transport bootleg liquor.
Korean in Japan depended on brewing bootleg liquor for their living because they could not get a regular job. That can be understood as finger-pointing at the reality of the Korean in Japan who can’t go back to their country even they released from the Japan because they were under the supervision of US military government and Japanese government.
Jeong seung-bak’s work that has setting of Chosun pointed out the Japanese imperialism brutality and 「Gomisuteba」and 「Tonshanobanzin」express criticism about Japan and US military government with describing type of Korean in Japan.
I believe you would accept that there are different viewpoint from Hayashi Kouji’s appraisal.
