The following is the passage of the last part in 〈The Big Picture〉, long novel of Douglas Kennedy. “I know. I know...... but this is it.” The true meaning of it is earnest hope to begin again. The original title of this novel was 〈The Man Who Wanted to Live His Life〉. That has the meaning of earnest dream which should not be abjured.
All architects in our country who wanted to live their lives on the way of architecture, to work with the jobs which they like and to have happy lives say that “We know, but we can’t help it.” as they end by clouding the words at this moment. But actually, they express another hope with shouting which they’d like to escape from the reality. That reality is in the situation which is different from the past dream. They are enduring hard life in the lonely world.
Culture in one society is the synthesis of value system which whole social members have. If the culture is compound value system of the thoughts and behavioral form in that society, to be social members in that society has the meaning to accept value system of the society. Accordingly, essential function of culture is not following the society passively but is in the reproduction. The urgent task for promoting the architectural culture is the reproduction of new value system which excavate and share the key point value. It is the duty of architects that they unite various opinions splitted and divided owing to different benefits relationship into one value and they reorganize the architectural market as an axis for national progress. One of the young architects gave me news that he had passed the examination of architect on the first day of the last November. For a moment, I was felt a shudder with the pressure of agitation and affection. I told him congratulations for his success with the suffering during the meantime. But in my remote mind I had a foreboding about his difficult future under dark clouds. No matter how difficult the architectural markets is, new born architects must be grown. No matter how the interests are in tangle, system maintenance and supporting system should be developed consistently for the fostering the new born architects. Not only equality of opportunity but also equality of results should be provided as the supporting measure for the handicapped architects. If the architectural design markets could not be grown, then they could be changed into wasteland at once.
Alice, one survivor from the Holocaust who has worked as a musician even after 100 years old wrote a book, 〈The Wisdom of 100 Years〉 and she said as following. “Every day is miracle.” She emphasized that, no matter how the situation was bad, she had the freedom to select the attitude among her lives and even delights. Now this moment is the right opportunity to decide the attitude for each architect’s life.
