This study examined aspects and patterns of word formation under specific conditions. Sixty middle school and high school students participated in experiments involving the making of words. Participants were shown 308 color chips and were required describe the colors using proper adjectives. Color names can be expressed using various linguistic types. While people may see the same color, they might view colors differently, or may be unable to find the proper words to express a particular color. In this experiment, elicited responses were restricted to adjectives. In making adjectives, respondents were required to transform words using their mental lexicon or make new words through adjectival forms. Findings from the experiment revealed several features related to nonce word formations. First, respondents tended to use derivation to make adjectives, favoring ‘-ida’ or ‘-gatda’ as suffixes rather than general suffixes for color terms. They combined ‘-ida’ or ‘-gatda’ directly after noun color terms. Moreover, participants sometimes ignored word spacing, because adjectives are not phrases but words. Next, participants generally used a variety of modifiers (conjugated forms of adjectives or adverbs) to express differences in the hue, brightness and chroma of the color chips. Lastly, when the participants could not find any proper color expression, they spoke of their feelings about the color or named objects that reminded them of the color. Customary color terms of KS A 0011 were also using the names of objects. However although customary color terms are standard and official color terms, this experiment showed differences between the customary color terms of KS A 0011 and participants’ actual responses.
