The paper aims to analyze Oscar wilde’s and Kim Dong-In’s aestheticism and their works, Salome and Gwangyeom Sonata through psychoanalytic theory. Lacan presents the subconscious desire of human as an essential factor constructing the human being. According to Lacang’s desire theory, Wilde and Kim, Dong-in’s Aestheticism can be interpreted as an idea for claiming the individual’s freedom and establishment of subjectivity resisting the society that they faced. The structure of characters’ desire shows the Oedipus Complex in Lacan’s theory. They are eager for their desire strongly. In the case of Salome, Salome pursues her desire through the image of art world. In Gwangyeom Sonata, a main character pursues his desire through the image of mother. There are no cozy answers for characters’ desire because their desire has a fundamental lack and absence.
In the viewpoint of personality, Wilde and Kim, Dong-in had the same character. Wilde and Kim, Dong-in suggested the relation between art and morality, and between art and real world In their works. Wilde was against Victorian vulgar materialism and moralism. Kim, Dong-in was against Lee, Kwang-soo’s enlightenment by using the style of aestheticism. Wilde and Kim, Dong-in had the same thought that art is superior to ethics. However, they had the difference in the viewpoint of aestheticism. Wild thought that art world always leads the real world and the real world always imitates art world. That is, art world is superior to the real world in Wilde’s viewpoint. On the other hand, Kim, Dong-in just had the art-oriented consciousness and sought for art world as an alternative to overcome difficulties in real world.
