The main purpose of this study is twofold: first, to prove that Patrick Modiano’s Rue des Boutiques Obscures, published as a novel in 1978, belongs to the autofiction and then, to show the practical aspects of the ambiguity poetics of this work. To realize the first objective, we tried to distinguish three protocols which can be used as the base for the theoretical establishment of the autofiction: the nominal protocol, the identity protocol and the fictional modal protocol. We adpoted here the perspective of Thierry Laurent, a prominent specialist of Patrick Modiano, who defines the autofiction on the basis of the identity protocol and the fictional modal protocol rather than the nominal protocol. In this study, we managed to reveal several elements that are linked each other, directly or indirectly, consciously or unconsciously, to the life of the author and his times. From these facts, we can conclude that this work clearly belongs to the autofiction. And to achieve the second objective of this study, we tried to examine the practical aspects of the autofiction of this work. For this aim, we paid attention to the effects of the ambiguity of this work. These are, for example, the character of the detective novel, the change of the narration from the first person to the third person, the frequent use of the suspension point, the levels of vocabulary, syntax and sentence, the frequent exchange between the present and the past, several devices like a wind and a noise which prevent the optical or acoustic clarity. If we consider the fact that Guy Roland, narrator of this work suffering from the amnesia, has no other means than to use a fiction to regain his evaporated past and his lost memories, it seems natural to see that Patrick Modiano strives to combine autobiographical and fictional elements in this work, which enable us to classify this works one form of autofictions.
