Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring published in l962 was a catalyst for the modern environmental movement. One of the most influential books in the 20th century, it awakened the public to the dangers of indiscriminate pesticide (DDT) use and chemical toxins in the environment. As one might expect, publication of Silent Spring unleashed a torrent of hostile reaction from scientists, media, and the chemical industry. Critics alleged that Carsons’s data were flawed and her inferences unscientific despite her four years of thorough and meticulous research and a wealth of supporting data. When their ‘noisy’ attacks failed to invalidate Carson’s conclusions, critics resorted to personal attacks on Carson based on her gender alleging that the author was a spinster who was prone to hysterics and emotional overreaction, ect.
Carson-bashing continued into the 21st century as 2007, the centennial of Carson’s birth approached. In 2012, on the 50th anniversary of the publication of Silent Spring, critics, mostly from the free-market chemical industry side, accused Carson of killing millions in the developing world they said were dying of malaria because of the DDT ban that resulted from publication of Silent Spring. Her detractors went on to insist that Carson was guilty of genocide because governments bought into her ‘junk science’ about DDT.
This paper examines the hostile reaction to Carson and Silent Spring in order to reveal Carson as a nature writer, a private person who reverenced all of life, both human and non-human. Warning against over-reliance on technology, she called for moral stewardship of environment and increased humility regarding the human impact on the earth. Silent Spring and Carson’s other writings and speeches emphasize the inter-relatedness of all life forms. Rachel Carson successfully integrated concerns about ecology and environmental ethics and more remarkably was successful in bringing these concerns to the public’s attention.
